What is Shadow-Work, and How Can It Transform Your Life?


 
 

Shadow work is a fundamental part of my coaching practice, especially for mothers. But what exactly is it? And how can it help you in your personal journey, especially in your role as a parent?

What Is Shadow Work?

Shadow work is the process of bringing to light the hidden parts of yourself—those aspects of your psyche that you’ve buried or suppressed over the years. These parts are often tucked away in your subconscious, so you may not even be aware of them. However, understanding and integrating your shadow is essential for becoming more self-aware and whole.

In my work with moms, shadow work can be a powerful tool for becoming a more mindful, patient, and present parent. It allows you to understand the deep-rooted triggers that affect your reactions, helping you shift from automatic responses to conscious, intentional choices.

How Do You Connect with Your Shadow?

Since your shadow resides in the subconscious, it’s not always easy to know it’s there. But here's the thing—your shadow often shows itself through the people and situations around you. In particular, the triggers you feel when interacting with your family—your kids, your spouse, or even close friends—are often a reflection of what lies hidden in your shadow.

Here are some guiding questions to start uncovering your shadow:

  • What triggers you in other people, especially your kids, spouse, or friends?

  • What are your greatest qualities?

  • What are the opposites of those qualities? (These are likely your shadow traits.)

  • What would happen if you fully embraced those shadow traits?

When you explore these questions, your shadow will begin to reveal itself. And as you connect the dots, you’ll start to see how the aspects of yourself that you’ve shut down or ignored are playing a part in your present-day reactions.

The Role of Childhood in Shadow Formation

Many times, we carry pieces of our shadow from childhood. Think back to the ways you had to dim parts of yourself to meet the expectations of your family or society. Were you told to be quiet, to be small, or to suppress your emotions?

For many mothers, these shadow traits are triggered when they see similar behaviors in their children. For example, if you were taught to be quiet and obedient as a child, you might feel irritated or overwhelmed when your child is loud or expressive. These reactions are not a reflection of your parenting ability—they are clues to the parts of yourself that still need healing and integration.

The Magic of Shadow Work

Here’s the magic: Shadow work allows you to live a more balanced, authentic life. When you bring those hidden parts of yourself into the light and consciously reintegrate them, you become more whole, patient, and present—not just for your kids, but for yourself and everyone around you.

By healing the wounds that caused you to suppress certain traits, you can release old patterns of behavior that no longer serve you. Instead of reacting from your triggers, you can respond with more understanding and empathy. This brings you closer to your true self—free, empowered, and authentic.

Most importantly, shadow work allows you to reclaim your own authenticity. And that, my friend, is your greatest gift—both to yourself and to your family.
